Abstract

This work consists of a brief development around the image-concept of chance located in the philosophy of Nietzsche and Mallarmé´s literature. In the caseof Nietzsche, the chance is presented through the metaphor of a throwing of dice that refers to the nature of events in the world. This nature is understood by the philosopher through the concept of chaos. For its part, in the work of Mallarmé, the chance is presented paradoxically through the image of  a shipwreck and the actions of certain characters (Igitur and the Master) who are perpetually in suspense. The nature of such images leads to thinking of chance as an intrinsic relation between the past and the future. This relationdefines the field of possible. It is the concept of limit that allows a comparison about the problem of chance in both authors.
