The coronavirus crisis in the oil industry: Strong impacts and the necessary organizational change to meet the challenges of its recovery

Abstract

April 2020 is already recognized as Black April for the hydrocarbon energy sector according to the International Energy Agency (IEA, 2020). Without a doubt, this period of the impact of COVID-19 will be remembered as one of the most tragic events in the history of the oil industry. First, we must leave the traditional thinking of oil crises to understand the footprint that COVID-19 has already left. This time, it was not a result of oil price drops due to geopolitical consequences, drone attacks, middle east conflicts, or any similar event that the reader can recall. This crisis of COVID-19, and which will affect Mexico in a very relevant way, can be defined as a "brutal drop in oil consumption" that may amount to more than 30 million barrels per day in 2020.
