Abstract

Introduction. The high costs of diabetes mellitus (DM) treatment are a problem in Mexico, because this is characterized by social inequality and precarious public health systems. The aim of this work was to describe expenses in the prevention and control of DM and its socio-economic impact based on the right to health. Direct and indirect costs projected to 2022 were analyzed, on a time series analysis of the Social Expenditure items of the Federal Public Administration. Discussion. There is a great variability and uncertain future on prevention and control of DM projected to 2022. In addition, expenditure on pharmacological treatment tends to disappear in 3 years. Conclusions. A discouraging future can be expected on expense to control and prevention of DM in Mexico. It is urgent to analyze and reorient the distribution of social spending that ensures the prevention and treatment of patients, focusing on the right to health.
