Abstract

The pandemic generated by the Covid-19 slowed down international and national tourist flows around the world. Mexico has begun to recover and already has 19% of international flows and 49% of national flows, compared to 2019.  Literature indicates that there are factors to increase domestic tourism. The objective of the article is to diagnose the behavior of mexican domestic tourism and to identify its principal drivers. According to the survey conducted for this study, 92% have changed their preferences for domestic travel. The econometric model used for this analysis was a Probit. The results indicate that in order to increase the recovery of tourist activity, the following factors should be encouraged: guarantee safe and disinfected facilities, accelerat the transfers of direct income to the population, create experiences for the increase of new travelers to Magical Towns and Heritage Cities; and be clear about the new activities that travelers want to do. A relevant result is that in the face of job instability, internal travel is an option. Finally, predominantly international destinations should offer discounts and optimal prices for the flow of national tourists, making Mexico for Mexicans.
