Influence of the microbiota in the association between periodontal disease and type 2 diabetes mellitus
Main Article Content
Abstract
The aim of this review is to analyze the existing evidence on the relationship of oral microbiota with the establishment and progression of periodontal disease and diabetes. We refer to microbiota as the ecosystem of microorganisms found in our body., where approximately more than 700 different bacteria are found in the oral cavity, and their dysbiosis gives rise to clinical characteristics added to other systemic and local factors. In recent years, the composition of the microbiota has been analyzed as a biological signature such as states of health or disease. Periodontal disease is considered to have a multifactorial origin and its etiopathogenic mechanism is based on oral dysbiosis. The bidirectional relationship of periodontitis with patients with endocrine diseases such as type 2 diabetes mellitus contributes to perpetuating an inflammatory state that consequently causes the loss of supporting periodontal tissues.
